Making It Work explores the idea of collaborative process. How do collectives work? How are collective imaginaries formed and developed? How does the process vary from one collective to another? How does shared authorship affect what is achieved as the end result? In some cases, is the end result even as important as the process? The collectives involved in Making It Work were invited self-reflexively examine their collaborative process and, in whatever way best suits their practice, present that process in the gallery. Essentially, this project turns the regular exhibition premise inside out and features process, rather than final results, as the main focus of the exhibition. Collaboration is the site where art making is actively complicated, where discussion, cooperation and argument coalesce to shape something new. The process is fascinating, rich and essential to the collective being.
